Placemarks set out to make good independent places easier to find, save, and share. We have decided to close the live product and stop operating the directory while we consider whether the idea has another chapter elsewhere.

The honest version
Good places. Real work. Not enough momentum.
Placemarks tackled a familiar problem: the best local places are often buried beneath generic search results, while the recommendations worth keeping are scattered across messages, screenshots, and notes. The product was built with care, but it did not find the sustained use needed to justify the cost and attention of running a live platform.
A directory only earns trust while its information is actively maintained. Leaving it online indefinitely would let the listings age and keep user data around without good reason. Closing it cleanly is the more honest choice.
Accounts are retired
Sign-in, saved places, collections, trip planning, reviews, and business dashboards have all been switched off.
A new home is possible
We will consider serious conversations about the domain, brand, product assets, technology, or a thoughtful next chapter.
